Grading System by WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education)

The Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) follows a structured grading system to assess student performance across different subjects. The system ensures fair and transparent evaluation based on academic achievement and competency levels.

1. WACE Grading Scale for Senior Secondary (Years 11 & 12)

Students in Years 11 and 12 receive grades from A to E, which indicate their level of performance.

  1. WACE Grading Scale for Senior Secondary (Years 11 & 12)

Students in Years 11 and 12 receive grades from A to E, which indicate their level of performance.

    Grade Description Performance Level
A Excellent Outstanding knowledge and application of concepts
B High Strong understanding with minor errors
C Satisfactory Basic competency, meets minimum requirements
D Limited Below average, needs improvement
E Very Limited Poor performance, lacks fundamental understanding
  2. ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) for University Admission
    • Students who aim for university studies receive an ATAR score, which ranks them based on their performance in comparison to other students.
    • ATAR scores range from 99.95 (highest) to 0.00 (lowest), determining eligibility for university courses.
    • ATAR is calculated using scaled scores from WACE subjects and is used for admissions in Australia and internationally.
  3. VET (Vocational Education and Training) Certification
    • Students who pursue practical and skill-based education receive VET qualifications instead of an ATAR.
    • VET courses are graded as Competent (C) or Not Yet Competent (NYC) based on skill acquisition.
    • These qualifications are industry-recognized and help students enter the workforce or pursue further training.
  4. WACE Achievement Standards for Certification

To be awarded a WACE certificate, students must:

    • Complete a minimum of 20 course units (or equivalent) across Years 11 & 12.
    • Achieve at least C grades or higher in 14 units (including specific English requirements).
    • Meet numeracy and literacy standards through assessments or alternative measures.
    • Successfully complete ATAR, General, or VET courses as per their chosen pathway.

ICAE’s Role in Supporting WACE Grading & Certification
